Tribute: The Seniors of Girls Basketball
A farewell to four incredible seniors.
As the final whistle blew for the Windward Girls Varsity Basketball team, it not only marked the end of an incredible playoff run, but also a bittersweet moment for the team as they said goodbye to four seniors who have left a lasting legacy on the program. Samari Bankhead, Olivia Lagao, Samara Durham, and Nina Antoni have led the team to the CIF southern section open division playoffs, a deep CIF Division 1 state playoff run, and the title of Gold Coast League champions. These four seniors have not only been outstanding athletes but are leaders, role models, and amazing people.
Olivia, known as “Livi,” has been a force on both ends of the court. A remarkable shooter and fierce defender, she reached the coveted 1,000-point milestone this season, which speaks volumes about her consistency and skill. She is a knock down shooter, with her knack for taking charges in crucial moments often shifting the momentum in Windward’s favor, helping to secure the win. She is headed to NYU for basketball. The Big Apple better get ready.
“These four seniors have not only been outstanding athletes but are leaders, role models, and amazing people.”
Samari, a UCF commit, has brought elite talent and infectious energy to the team. She has an unguardable spin move and electrifying celebrations, leading to a few technical fouls and lots of points scored. Samari was not only a standout performer, but also the one who kept spirits high. She brought everyone’s energy up when the team was down which helped get them back in the game. Her balance of competitiveness and charisma made practices fun and games exciting.
Nina has been the team’s vocal leader, providing guidance and support to her teammates, especially the underclassmen. She mentored the freshmen and ensured they understood the team’s plays. Her knowledge of the game is exceptional; teammates describe her as a mini coach. Nina’s leadership has fostered a cohesive team environment, setting a standard for the future of girls basketball at Windward.
Samara, who served as the point guard, has exemplified empathy and encouragement. Her constant check-ins and motivational support have pushed her teammates to elevate their performance. Samara’s selfless approach and dedication to team success have been instrumental in building a strong cohesive team.
Windward thanks the four of them for all they have done. We can not wait to see what they accomplish next.
