In a world often marked by division, a simple gathering on Foley Field became a profound reminder of the power of unity and resilience.

On October 7th, Foley Field became a space for students and faculty to gather in reflection, connection, and learning, organized by Windward School’s Jewish Affinity Group.

Designed to offer a safe and inclusive setting, the memorial invited participants to share perspectives and find solace in a supportive community. Through conversations and moments of quiet remembrance, attendees honored the day’s significance together, creating a meaningful experience that bridged differences and highlighted shared values.

Set during lunch, the event was thoughtfully timed and located for easy access, allowing more students and faculty to participate. Organized stations created intimate settings within the open field, where attendees could engage in discussions about the events on October 7th, in which they were able to talk about their feelings towards that day and reflect on the one year anniversary of the event.

Yellow pins were distributed as symbols of remembrance, visually representing a commitment to unity. 

In this space, art emerged as a therapeutic and symbolic tool, capturing the message, “We Will Dance Again” that Tamar P (‘27) set up. This mantra, shared in a designated discussion space, embodied the spirit of recovery and renewal.

Recently, this sign was located on the Bridge, for all of Windward to see and reflect. Attendees were encouraged to consider the strength and solidarity of the Windward community, which remains steadfast despite difficult times. 

The Importance of Community

Eitan S (’26), a co-leader of the Jewish Affinity Group and one of the discussion facilitators, expressed the importance of having a supportive network during challenging times.

“It’s always nice to have like-minded people around you at sensitive times,” he said. Eitan led conversations that encouraged students to openly share their thoughts, emphasizing empathy and understanding.

Ashley Goodman, the faculty advisor for the Jewish Affinity Group, also highlighted the significance of creating such a space. “The anniversary produced a lot of emotions, whether that’s fear or sadness,” said Goodman. “The space (on the Field) was a place for all students to come together to share and express those emotions and fears.”

Ashley’s focus was on making sure all students, regardless of background, felt welcomed and supported in processing the day’s significance. 

By creating this supportive environment, Windward’s Jewish Affinity Group provided a meaningful platform for all students and faculty in Windward to connect during lunch, forging new memories and reinforcing the ties that bind them together.

The event at Foley Field became more than just a gathering, but a testament to the power of community, a reminder that, even through hardship, there is hope.
